Either Rutgers was going to take a step forward against a dysfunctional Nebraska team and snap a five-year Big Ten home losing streak in primetime, or the Greg Schiano rebuild, now in its third season, would officially be behind schedule after missing a golden opportunity for the second time in 13 days.

Now Rutgers is stuck on three wins, with the final five games of the regular season looming as an absolute gauntlet, with Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Maryland to come. In the end, there was no miracle finish. Instead, all that remained was the reality of the situation, as the Scarlet Knights struggle to gain a foothold in a rebuilding job that still has a long way to go.
